What's New at Garden Patch Farms
What's Picking for week of Sept 1
PICKING UPDATE - WEEK OF Sept 1
FRUIT - Our Peach season is just about finished with only one variety left to pick.. Wow, we experienced an awesome peach crop this year, but all good things will come to an end. Pears and Asian Pears are still in abundance in the orchard as well as baskets of pears and asian pears in the market.
Our Apple crop will be extremely limited this fall. Honeycrisp apples have finished early and many of our normal early apple varieties were hit with late frosts in the spring and didn't produce many apples on the trees. We will have plenty of Honeycrisp in the market that are from our orchard. Our late varieties of apples will be limited in the orchard. We will have plenty of apples in the market this fall, although many varieties will come from the Michigan orchards. So shop the market for some great apples for your traditional fall apple receipes. Don't be afraid to ask if they are from our orchard or Michigan orchards.
VEGETABLES- There is still a lineup of veggies picking although they are becoming limited this week. Available are...Green beans, wax beans, beets, kale, pickles, eggplant, and zuchinni.
This year has been a year of extremes from the weather standpoint. Early in the year we experienced many 80 degree days in April and then cold and heavy frosts in late May. June and July brought many hot humid days with regular heavy rains. This mix of temperatures and high humidity, and rain created tough growing conditions for our U-pick farm and Orchard. Our crops suffered from the flooding and severe heat this summer. Our Market is kept stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables, most of which are still coming off our farm, but some are now being brought in from other local sources.
Don't forget the mosquito repellant to keep the mosquitos from spoiling your visit. Mosquitos seem to be enjoying our farm this year due to the heavy rains we've experienced in late July andAugust.
